ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction There are no official diagnostic protocols for singing voice assessment. In this publication, on the basis of a literature review, standards for the singing voice handicap index exclusively dedicated to voice disorders in singing have been given. Objective The study aims to determine the normative values for the singing voice handicap index. Methods The study is a systematic review and a meta-analysis. A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed to access relevant databases and to locate outcome studies. The "inclusion" criteria were as follows: English language, original papers and human studies retrospective and prospective papers, cross-sectional and case-control studies. Results Eight articles were included for the final analysis. The normative value for the singing voice handicap index was 20.35 with a confidential range of 10.6-30.1 for a group of 729 healthy subjects whose voices were judged as normal, with an age range of 16-64 years. Conclusion The mean normative value of the singing voice handicap index was 20.35 with the confidence levels between 10.6 and 30.1.


Resumo Introdução Não há protocolos diagnósticos oficiais para avaliação de voz no canto. Neste estudo baseado em uma revisão de literatura, são fornecidos padrões para o índice de desvantagem vocal no canto exclusivamente dedicado a distúrbios vocais no canto. Objetivo Determinar os valores normativos para o índice de desvantagem vocal no canto. Método O estudo é uma revisão sistemática com metanálise. Uma busca sistemática da literatura foi feito no PubMed para acessar bancos de dados relevantes e para localizar estudos de desfecho. Os critérios de inclusão foram: estudos escritos em inglês, artigos originais e estudos em seres humanos, retrospectivos e prospectivos, estudos transversais e de caso-controle. Resultados Oito artigos foram incluídos na análise final. O valor normativo para o índice de desvantagem vocal no canto foi de 20,35 com intervalo de confiança de 10,6 a 30,1 em um grupo de 729 indivíduos saudáveis cujas vozes foram consideradas normais, de 16 a 64 anos. Conclusões O valor normativo médio do índice de desvantagem vocal no canto foi de 20,35 com intervalo de confiança entre 10,6 e 30,1.

Hoy en día el conocimiento avanza a pasos agigantados. Cada vez hay más fonoau-diólogos en diversas áreas de la profesión. Llama la atención de muchos el área ar-tística, pues es un área poco explorada y amplia. Este artículo tiene el objetivo de reflexionar sobre la intervención vocal en artistas (cantantes, actores y otros). Su im-plementación debe comprender una mirada completa de la persona: voz, fisiología, fisiopatología, emociones, rol, aspectos médicos, farmacológicos y características in-dividuales. Esto promueve la adherencia de un profesional de la voz a su área de conocimiento y genera un espacio de sanidad, exploración y libertad artística en términos actuales, incluso en medio de una pandemia


Nowadays the knowledge is advancing by leaps and bounds. The number of Speech Pathologists in different areas of the profession has increased. The artistic area calls the attention of many, because it is a hardly explored and wide area. This article aims to reflect on vocal intervention on artists (singers, actors and others). Its imple-mentation should include a thorough overview of the person: voice, physiology, phy-siopathology, emotions, role, medical and pharmacological aspects and individual characteristics. This promotes the adhesion of a voice professional to their area of its own knowledge, thus allowing a space for healing, exploration and artistic freedom in current terms, even in the midst of a pandemic

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Descrever valores de Capacidade Vital Forçada (CVF), Pressão Inspiratória Máxima (PImáx) e Pressão Expiratória Máxima (PEmáx) em cantores profissionais populares de um município de interior de estado e compará-los com os valores preditos pela literatura. Métodos: Pesquisa quantitativa e retrospectiva, com 18 cantores profissionais populares, com média de idade de 36,6 anos. Foi medida a CVF por meio de espirômetro portátil digital e as pressões respiratórias máximas com manovacuômetro digital. Resultados: Não houve significância estatística entre os três grupos, quanto aos valores preditos, medidos e as diferenças de CVF. Quanto à Pimáx, apenas houve significância entre valores preditos e medidos no grupo de cantoras (p = 0,026); nos grupos masculinos não houve significância (p = 0,121; p = 0,715); e também não houve nas diferenças entre valores preditos e medidos. Nas PEmáx, não houve significância estatística entre valores preditos e medidos nos três grupos e nas diferenças entre os três grupos. Conclusão: A CVF e PEmáx se apresentaram dentro da normalidade prevista nos três grupos estudados, com exceção do grupo de cantoras, em que os valores medidos de PImáx foram menores do que os valores preditos. Objective: To describe the values of Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) and Maximal Expiratory Pressure (MEP) in popular professional singers of a country town of a state; and to compare them with values predicted by literature. Methods: Quantitative and retrospective research, with 18 popular professional singers, average of 36.61 years old. The FVC was collected using a portable digital spirometer and the maximal respiratory pressure with a digital manovacuometer. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the three groups, for predicted, measured values and differences for FVC. Concerning MIP, there was only significance between predicted and measured values in the singer group (p = 0.026); in the male groups there was no significance (p = 0.121, p = 0.715); and there were no differences between predicted and measured values. In the MEP, there was no statistical significance between predicted and measured values in the three groups and in the differences between the three groups. Conclusion: The FVC and MEP presented within expected normality in the three groups studied, except for the group of female singers, in which the measured values of MIP were lower than the predicted values. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Professional singers have a particular "ringing" sound quality during singing, so called singer's formant. Two types of professional singers in Korea that sound very different are classical (pansori) and western style performers. The purpose of this research was to systematically analyze and compare the acoustic sound structure of both the speaking and singing voices of Korean classical singers (pansori). We also investigated the morphologic and vibratory characteristics of vocal folds using videostroboscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 24 classical singers and 29 western style singers were subjects. The formant frequencies, intensities and singing power ratio was evaluated for clarifying the existence of singing formant. Using laryngeal stroboscopy, the vibratory characteristics were evaluated. RESULTS: The all formant intensities were incraesed in the classical singers, but typical increase of third and fourth formant in the western style singers. The singing power ratio was smaller in the western style singers. Most of classical singers showed abnormal vibratory patterns. CONCLUSION: The western style singers have typical singing formant during singing, but not in the classical singers. Most of classical singers showed abnormal vibratory patterns of vocal folds during phonation, but usually normal vibration in the western style singers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There have been no systematic studies addressing the voice problems among Korean classical singers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the voice problems in Korean classical singers and provide a guide in the management of their voice problems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The voice problems in 222 classical singers who visited Ewha woman's university hospital with dysphonia were analyzed, using laryngovideostroboscopy, aerodynamic and acoustic analyzer. RESULTS: The most common voice symptom in Korean classical singers was hoarseness (62.1%) and their most common lesion in the vocal folds was vocal nodule (42.8%). In classical singers who had vocal nodule, there was no significant reduction of expiratory pressure (p<0.05), but the mean air flow rate was increased (p<0.05). There were no significant differences between classical singers who had vocal nodule and normal adults in jitter, shimmer and noise to harmonic ratio (NHR). CONCLUSION: This study reveals that numerous voice problems can be present even in trained classical singers. Also, we recognized the fact that normal voice may occur even in the presence of abnormal laryngeal findings in trained professional classical singers because of their training to protect and refine their vocal skills. Therefore, in future studies, it may be useful for laryngologists to obtain a baseline assessment of laryngeal function in trained classical singers to permit accurate diagnosis of the causes of voice dysfunction in voice professionals whose baseline laryngeal behavior may be unusual.
